Friends of
Lakeland School is a non-profit organization formed in May 2002. It
was formed to insure that "No Child Left Behind" means all children, despite
their special needs. By working with the community, we wish to educate others on
the important value of Lakeland School, to raise awareness of its
contributions to society and to obtain financial support to insure its
continued advancements.
Lakeland School was formed in
1950 to serve the needs of students with disabilities, ranging in age from
3-21 from all of the 15 school districts. In addition to the
approximate 260 students that attend Lakeland School, the school also
provides the administration services for nearly 1800 students in the 15
school districts in Walworth County. When you read about the operating
costs for Lakeland School, it's important to understand what the money is
used for beyond the doors of Lakeland. It includes special education
staff in some of the outside districts, as well. Statements made by County
representatives and a recent study, show that the school serves the best
interest of the taxpayers. The challenge is getting the state and
federal to provide the amounts that they have promised. State funding
is to be 63%, while only 30% is received. Federal funding is to be
40%, while only 17% is received.
Because of this shortfall of
funding, the day to day educational necessities and the overall future of
Lakeland School is at risk. Through your support and contributions, we
are able to make a difference. By working with liaisons from Lakeland,
FOLS purchases items presented on a needs list. We have also been able
to establish an endowment fund to aid in securing the future of Lakeland
School.
We rely on the support of
parents, volunteers and the community to help us meet the needs of our
children. Without this support, many needs would go unmet.
